Susan's Sketchbook and Drawings

These woodburnings were designed by the artist and inspired by photographs taken on class field trips or sketches while traveling.

Susan prefers to burn on pine or mink wood since their softness affords her the capabilities to burn deeply in order to give texture and a sense of 3-dimensionality to her pieces.  In fact, they are often called carvings, which they are not.  The hallmark of this artist's woodburnings is the use various textural techniques within the solid, black areas of her compositions.  Her compositions also incorporate the individuality of each piece's grain and knots.

Each piece is covered with spar-urethane,  in order to prevent sun damage, which causes fading.  The pieces with prismacolor are first sprayed with enamel in order to intensify and seal the colors previous to coating them with spar-urathane.
